365体育投注开户A testimonial from our very own Mr. Scott Long, principal at Doherty Elementary:
To Whom It May Concern,
Meet every learner where they are at.
365体育投注开户Do what’s best for kids.
365体育投注开户Differentiate your instruction.
365体育投注开户Find the strengths within a child and work from there.
365体育投注开户Go above and beyond the call of duty to meet the needs of all kids.
365体育投注开户This is what we are told to do every single day as educators. And, we do this with pride.
But, what happens when there is an international pandemic that forces schools to shut down? What happens when leadership from the very top of the state provides us with little to no direction on what to do next?
365体育投注开户In the West Bloomfield School District, led by Dr. Gerald Hill, Deanna Barash, and Eric Whitney, we did what we knew was best for our kids, our family, our community. We did what we strive to teach our kids to do. We did what the national pundits always tell us to do.
We innovated. We thought outside of the box. We became flexible. We were proactive. We connected with each other and our community. We stepped up our leadership, and
we became the rock that all others could count on. After all, we had no other example to look towards.
The result? Well, it has been nothing short of magical.
365体育投注开户Last night, at 7:30 PM, my son and I tucked ourselves into bed, turned on my computer, and we tuned in to a Zoom video conference bedtime story, where one of our kindergarten teachers read aloud a story to her students. In a time of uncertainty and anxiety, when kids were looking for normalcy, their little eyes and little hearts found it. They didn’t find it in their President. They didn’t find it from the MDE.
365体育投注开户They found it from their kindergarten teacher.
All of the children of the West Bloomfield School District are getting that same sense of normalcy from every single teacher. Meanwhile, parents are authentically partnering with us to give our kids hope and a fighting chance to continue engaging in the timeless power of public education.
Last week, when school was cancelled, our staff rallied together for seven and a half hours to solidify a vision created by our district leadership. They could have complained. They could have gone into their shell out of fear. They could have said, “Well other districts are not doing what we are doing.” But, they didn’t. Instead, they did what the nation always clamors for when it comes to educating our children. They rolled up their sleeves, created meaningful learning opportunities in an online platform, and they made magic happen. More importantly, over the past week, they continue to make that magic happen.
On Monday, March 16th, when direction from the state had still not been provided about how we should best support our students, our paraprofessionals, secretaries, and teachers spent the entire day getting Chromebooks, learning resources, and food into the hands of our families. One by one, each family greeted us with a smile and sincerely heartfelt THANK YOU for the courageous work we were doing.
I could go on and on. But, here’s the bottom line. When you decide to make a sweeping generalized decision to NOT count our learning experiences, I would ask you to consider what you are really saying to the families, kids, and educators of the West Bloomfield School District.
By making a blanket decision for all school districts, are you really meeting every district where they are at? If not, what is that saying to us when you ask us to meet every learner
where they are at?
365体育投注开户Are you really doing what’s best for the kids of the West Bloomfield School District?
365体育投注开户Are you differentiating your decisions? If not, what does that say to educators when you demand that we differentiate our instruction?
365体育投注开户Are you finding the strengths within each district and working from there? If not, how does your leadership example diminish what you expect from educators when they are called to find the strengths in every single child that walks through our doors?
And finally, when you decide to discount our innovation, our flexibility, our proactive attempts to support our community, what are you really telling our children?
365体育投注开户Deep down, I am optimistic that you know the right answers to these questions, and I am optimistic that you will use those answers as an opportunity to do what is right.
